RubberDucks shut out Flying Squirrels 3-0
BY DAVE WILSON
(RICHMOND, VA) - Akron's Bobby Bradley socked a pair of RBI singles, and Shao-Ching Chiang improved to 3-0 on the season, as the RubberDucks captured a 6-3 road victory over the Richmond Flying Squirrels Monday night at the Diamond.
The RubberDucks (19-11) held a 6-3 lead going to the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Flying Squirrels loaded the bases with one out against closer Leandro Linares. Facing the potential winning run, Linares induced a double-play grounder to shortstop Todd Hankins on a 2-1 pitch to Jerry Sands. The Ducks turned the 6-4-3 double play to end the game and secure the club's sixth straight victory.
Chiang (3-0) battled through five innings and scattered six hits. Seemingly pitching without his best stuff, Chiang only allowed two runs on six hits. One of his runs came in the third inning when Ka'ai Tom attempted to catch a sinking line drive in right field off the bat of Miguel Gomez, but the ball eluded Tom's diving attempt and bounded toward the wall for an RBI triple. Lefty David Speer followed Chiang and tossed three innings, his longest outing of the year. Speer allowed a run in the sixth to make it 4-3, but rebounded with a pair of scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth. Speer struck out four and walked only one.
After Hankins scored on a wild pitch in the first inning, the Ducks notched three more in the second against Richmond starter Garrett Williams (1-1). After a pair of walks to start the inning, Tyler Krieger ripped an RBI single, Joe Sever lifted a sacrifice fly and Bradley delivered the first of his two RBI singles to make it 4-0. Bradley struck again in the seventh with an RBI hit to right off Carlos Diaz, and Andrew Calica drove in a run with a fielder's choice to extend the lead to 6-3.
The RubberDucks have won six straight overall, all five on the current road trip, and 10 of the last 11 games...Richmond (16-13) used five pitchers in the game...Calica was 1-5 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games...Sever was 2-4 and now has hit safely eight straight games. Sever is now hitting .317 on the year...Time of game: 3:10...Attendance: 3,085.
