Tuesday Wickliffe Memorial Stadium hosted a crucial early season battle of Lake County’s two better soccer programs. The home Wickliffe Blue Devils hosted the Blue
Streaks of Madison in a battle four-win teams. Wickliffe entered the contest with a 4-1-1 record and the Blue Streaks were 4-1-2. The game lived up to it’s billing as it was a close battle throughout as the Blue Devils came out on top 4-2 as Wickliffe’s two Nicks (Senior Nick Telisman, Senior Nick Colbert) combined for four goals and two assists in the win.

Telisman started his work early just 1:17 into the match when he kicked a laser past Madison Goalkeeper Nick March to give Wickliffe the early 1-0 lead.

The Blue Devils extended their lead at the 10:05 mark of the first half when Colbert executed a perfect penalty kick past March to make the advantage 2-0.

It took a bit of time but at the 22:10 point of the first half Madison got on the board when Junior Gage Vanney struck gold with a shot past Wickliffe Senior Goalkeeper JT Brenneman to close the gap to 2-1.

Then just 31 seconds later with 22:51 off the game clock Senior Collin Skoch surprised Brenneman and tied the game 2-2.

The score remained tied until 36:02 had run off the clock in the first half and Telisman struck once again, aided by Colbert with the assist to give Wickliffe a 3-2 lead at half.

In the first 40 minutes the Blue Devils too only four shots converting on three of them. Madison took five shots in the first half converting on two, the other three ended up in Brenneman’s hand for saves.

There were only four shots combined in the second half by both teams. Wickliffe had one shot and made it count as Telisman, once again assisted by Colbert put the ball into the net past March at the 42:05 mark of the game, which turned out to be the final score of the match.
Madison took three shots in the second half, but Brenneman’s senior experience aided by great Wickliffe defense thwarted the Madison effort.

The Blue Devils will be back in action on Tuesday night at home against the Berkshire Badges at 7:00 p.m. The Blue Streaks next match is also on Tuesday at home against the Riverside Beavers at 7:00 p.m.
