Pakistan governor murdered by his own guard

In a stunning assassination on Tuesday in Pakistan the governor of the Punjab Province Salman Taseer was gunned down by his own body guard in a Market in Islamabad. Taseer was taken to the hospital but died due to blood loss. Reports say that doctors removed 26 bullets from his body.

The body guard Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri immediately surrendered to police. Apparently the motive for the assassination was that Taseer disagreed with Pakistan’s controversial blasphemy law, which the assassin agreed with.

Taseer was at the market to meet a friend for lunch he was shot after lunch while he was leaving the market. Officials at the hospital said that the governor was dead when he arrived at the hospital. Doctors reported that Taseer had been shot in the neck, face, chest and legs.

Taseer had been the governor of Punjab Province since May of 2008.
