Drew Holcomb shines a "Good Light"

Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors- Good Light

There seems to be a over saturation in the music business these day of just about every genre there is, especially with Folk Roots Rock, or Americana music. My guess is that since Rock and Roll is extinct, this is the most pure and closest thing to Rock and Roll there is right now. In a sea of sound-alikes it's hard to distinguish oneself from the rest of the herd. Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors is one such band that is definitely making their form of music stand out from the rest of the pack.  Click here for the whole story

"Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey"

BY MATT BROWN

The Hobbit: An Unexpected JourneyAn Unexpected Journey is the first in a prequel trilogy to the Lord of the Rings films.  It is based the prequel book and follows it pretty closely.   It is once again directed by Peter Jackson.  It stars Ian McKellan, Martin Freeman and Richard Armitage.  I really loved this film, not as much as the Fellowship of the Ring but it is definitely one of my favorite fantasy films.

The special effects were great all around.  There was some great creature design buoyed by some terrific make-up and visual effects.  I saw it in 3D.  It was enjoyable but not necessary.  Click here for the whole story

"Flight"

BY MATT BROWN

Flight is a movie about a pilot struggling with addiction.  It stars Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle, and Kelly Reilly.  It was directed by Robert Zemeckis.  This was a fantastic film but a bit darker than some of Zemeckis' other fare.

The beginning of the film was riveting and peppered with bits of comedy.  I literally braced for impact when the plane crashed.  It was probably the most intense scene I have seen all year.  The middle was more serious but filled with character development.  I thought this movie had the issue most Zemeckis films have.  He gets you so good in act 1 and 2, that his act 3 tends to disappoint(in comparison to the first 2 acts at least).  He does make long films in his defense.  This was definitely a darker film because of the subject matter.  Click here for the whole story

Attack Cat gives Music and Hope

BY BILL SMITH
MUSIC CRITIC

Many artists are known for their charitable acts of kindness, and Cleveland certainly has its fair share of giving and talented musicians. Attack Cat is one of Cleveland’s best bands, and some of the nicest people you will ever want to meet. They have recently released a new single on their website, and are donating 100% of t he proceeds of the sale of the new song to the Cleveland Children’s Hunger Fund.

“Matchstick” is a song the band debuted on November 6, via their website, and Band Camp page. It is the first song being dropped off of their forthcoming Christmas album, which will be released in it’s entirety on November 27. I recently had the opportunity to speak with the band which features Dave Douglas on guitar, vocals and drums, and Rachel Hoskins on keyboards, and vocals. The song was inspired by the Hans Christian Anderson classic “The Little Match Girl.” Rachel shared with me “Matchstick is available as a free download on Bandcamp, but we are encouraging folks to purchase it to contribute to helping needy children.”

Oldboy releases new record

BY BILL SMITH

For those of us that live in, and around the Greater Cleveland area, we fully know the tremendous talent that resides along the shores of Lake Erie. Although, we don’t always appreciate it, it’s easier to focus on what we don’t
Oldboyhave, or how much our teams don’t win, or a million and one other things that would make Cleveland “better.” I will be the first to admit that I need reminded of this fact, as well. Once in a while you come across something that gently reminds you that there are great artist and talented people who call Cleveland home, and as such we should support them with all means possible. I was recently given a copy of new CD from a band named Oldboy, which isn’t all that shocking, seeing as I receive albums all the time to listen to and offer my opinion on. With “Covered in Sound” is the first official release from the band hailing from the east side of Cleveland, and to my surprise I was very impressed with this band and their record.   Click here for the whole story
