Case snaps 24 game conference losing streak, with 4-2 win over Washington University-St. Louis

(ALMONTE SPRINGS, FL ) - To say it's been a long time coming for the Case Western Reserve University softball team would be an understatement. On Tuesday afternoon, the Spartans ended a three-year conference losing streak with a 4-2 upset of No. 23 nationally-ranked Washington University-St. Louis on day one of the 2012 University Athletic Association Championship at Seminole Field.

Case had lost 24 UAA games in a row dating back to a 2-1 victory versus Emory University (Ga.) on March 15, 2008.

With the win, the Spartans improve to 4-2 overall heading into a 10:00 a.m. matchup with No. 4 Emory tomorrow. Wash. U. (7-2, 1-1 UAA) sees a three-game win streak snapped in only its fourth loss all-time to Case in 25 meetings.

Freshman two-time UAA Pitcher of the Week Rebecca Taylor led the way on the mound once again. The rookie hurler allowed just one earned run on two hits and a walk while striking out eight.

The Spartans picked up single runs in both the first and second innings to lead 2-0. Senior first baseman Lauren Wolzprovided an RBI single in the first, while senior third baseman Kaeleen Boden< drove in the run in the second with a sacrifice fly.

Wash. U. picked up its first run thanks to an error in the third, but Case tacked on an insurance score in the fifth on an RBI single by sophomore infielder Makenzie Lein.

The Bears once again cut into the lead with a Corissa Santos sac fly in the sixth, but Case again answered in the top of the seventh when sophomore leftfielder Katherine Seo plated pinch-runner Shruthi Srinivas with a single to left.

For the game, Wolz, Lein and sophomore catcher Amy Taylor were all 2-for-4.
