CWRU men's tennis team sweeps Allegheny

(SHAKER HTS, OH) - Highlighted by a marathon victory at No. 1 singles by freshman Will Drougas (Roanoke, Va./Salem), the No. 19 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team swept Allegheny College (Pa.), 9-0, on Friday night at the Cleveland Skating Club.

The Spartans (5-4) stay perfect in home dual matches at 3-0 without dropping a point. Allegheny is swept for the first time this season and falls to 5-2 overall.

Drougas, ranked 12th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region, dropped his first set against Patrick Cole, 6-3. The freshman then trailed in the second-set tiebreaker before rallying to win 7-6. Not to be outdone, Drougas trailed again in the third-set tiebreaker by four match points and came back to claim an 11-9 victory.

The other five singles matches were straight-set wins for the Spartans with senior Sean Carr (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) at No. 2, sophomore Eric Klawitter (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hershey) at No. 3, sophomore John Healey (Columbia, Md./Atholton) at No. 4, freshman Bas Van Lent (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) at No. 5 and sophomore Ben McClarren (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) at No. 6.

To open the evening, the Spartans swept through doubles play as Healey and junior Kyle Gerber (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory) won 8-6 at No. 1; junior Richard Brunsting (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) and Carr won 8-3 at No. 2; and Drougas and senior captain Rohan Patel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) won 8-3 at No. 3.

Case opens versus Hope College (Mich.) at 12:30 p.m. before playing the host Yeomen at 4:00 p.m. The Spartans also play Division I Cleveland State University on Sunday, March 4 in Westlake, Ohio at 2:00 p.m..
