Lake Erie College places three wrestlers in top six at Midwest Classic
(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - Paced by three top-six finishes, the Lake Erie College wrestling team inched up three spots to finish in 14th place at the 2011 Midwest Classic at the University of Indianapolis on Monday. The Storm recorded 53.5 points, just 1.5 points behind Ashland University.
Freshman Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) was the top individual for the Storm, placing third at 165 pounds. After going 3-1 on Sunday, he advanced to the consolation finals Monday morning where he decisioned Ashland's Tommie Graszi 2-1 in overtime to claim third place and improve to 16-4 on the season.
After making his season debut just this past Wednesday, sophomore Zak Vargo (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) won four times over the weekend and reached the consolation finals at 149 pounds before falling to Maryville University's Keenan Hagerty, 8-5.
The third Storm grappler to place in the top six was sophomore Zev Green (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) who finished sixth at 174 pounds. He dropped a close 6-4 decision in the consolation semifinals and then lost to Indiana Tech's Tanner Martin on a questionable pin with just 22 seconds remaining in regulation. Despite the two losses, Green finished the event with a 4-3 record to move his season mark to 13-7.
The trio of Vandermeer (17), Vargo (15) and Green (9) combined to score 41 of the Storm's 53 points. Last year, the Storm scored just 37.5 points in its debut at the Midwest Classic.
Lake Erie is idle for the remainder of 2011. The Storm opens the new year on Saturday, Jan. 7, by hosting the inaugural Storm Open at the Jerome T. Osborne Family Athletic and Wellness Center. email@example.com POSTED 12/19/2011 17:46
