Indians developmental league update
The Scottsdale Scorpions won 6-3, and are 8-7 on the season and in first place. Ronny Rodriguez is heating up, and a pair of pitching were keys in the Thursday win.
OF Tyler Holt 1-4 RBI R He has hits in five of the last six games. He still has yet to record an extra base hit and a little more disappointing, he only has three stolen bases in four attempts. Holt will never be a power hitter, in fact he didn’t even hit a home run in 2012, but had 15 doubles and nine triples. He has a nice 8/5 K/BB ration this fall, which is something he has always been able to keep consistent. But if he can’t use his speed to take extra bases on hits, it would be nice to see his stolen base numbers jump out a bit more. Nobody else has more than three stolen bases on the team either, so there’s no reason to jump off any kind of bridge. He is getting a lot of playing time in left and right field, which is helping his versatility, though.
SS Ronny Rodriguez 2-4 2B R RBI CS R-Rod (he’s starting to earn the nickname) now has six hits over the last three games, including a pair of doubles. He’s now second on the team in batting average (of anyone with more than 10 at bats), with a nice .290 average. Rodriguez may never be a guy who hits above .270, as he can be a streaky hitter and is a bit of a free swinger,(8 games played, 0 walks drawn). Another nice development though, is his defense. He helped turn two double plays in the game, and has been very solid defensively.
LH SP TJ House The lefty from Picayunne, MS , went a solid five innings for the second straight start. He allowed two runs on five hits, walked two and struck out six. In 13 innings pitched so far, he has a nice 14/5 K/BB ratio, showing the great control he had in the regular season this year, before sort of tailing off in the playoffs. House should start with AAA Columbus and depending on what the Indians do in the trade market, he could wind up getting the call at some point this year, similar to Scott Barnes’ situation.
RH RP Shawn Armstrong 1 IP 1 H 1 BB; Armstrong got into real trouble for just the second time in five fall outings. His 3/4 K/BB ratio is a bit out of whack from his outstanding regular season but he’s only allowed two hits in 5.2 innings. He worked around a leadoff double and then a walk with one out,
Venezuelan Winter League
Jesus Aguilar 0-1 K Aguilar came on as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning and struck out swinging. He now has 17 K’s in 31 at bats in 10 games played. The Indians did agree to let Aguilar play for his home team this winter, in favor of heading the Arizona Fall League. It seemed like at the end of the regular season, he was really figuring things out at the plate, in terms of his plate discipline. The time away from the coaching staff may have gotten him a little out of his plan at the plate. The Indians may regret not having him head to the AFL, where they could have given him more direct coaching. Aguilar is a hard-working, smart hitter, but this is a bit of a step back.
