Beyond the Box score; Cleveland Indians minor league roundup.
AAA Columbus Clippers L 3-1 vs. Norfolk Tides (Baltimore Orioles)
LHP David Huff (5.1 IP 8 H 1 ER 1 BB 1 K) Huff snapped a string of six straight starts of allowing three or more runs and seven straight of two or more. He pitched well enough for the win, but at this point it’s unclear if the Indians feel he is worth another shot in the rotation with Roberto Hernandez close to returning in a week.
AA Akron Aeros rained out vs. New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Toronto Blue Jays)
Newly promoted pitcher Danny Salazar was due for his first start at AA. A pair of seven inning games will be played tomorrow between the two teams.
High A Carolina Mudcats L 10-3 vs. Lynchburg Hillcats (Atlanta Braves)
OF Bo Greenwell (2-4 RBI) after his modest three game hit streak was snapped last night, Greenwell came back and drove in one of the few runs scored by the Mudcats on Saturday. Off to a hot start in August, hitting .385 through the first four games.
RH RP Kyle Blair (3.1 7 H 6 ER) on the other side of things, the last two nights have been ugly ones for the Mudcats and after starter Jordan Cooper was a little roughed up through 5.1, Blair didn’t offer much relief. His E.R.A sits at 5.91 in Carolina as well as a 7.32 ERA between Lake County and the Mudcats.
Low A Lake County Captains L 7-6 vs. South Bend Silver Hawks (Arizona Diamondbacks)
OF Bryson Myles (2-4 1 R 1 SB) Myles scored one of the Captains six runs that wasn’t enough to win the game. Also stealing a base and was involved on the hitting end of a nicely played hit-and-run that sent a runner to third in a six run second inning. Myles continues to look solid with room to grow while fighting off a hamstring injury.
C Jake Lowery (1-4 3 run HR) Lowery put the Captains in command early on with a nice opposite field 3 run blast. His numbers haven’t been off the charts since his swap with Alex Monsalve, from Carolina to the Captains but does has 4 home runs in 17 games with Lake County.
Short Season Rookie Mahoning Valley Scrappers L 8-3 vs. Tri City Valley Cats (Houston Astros)
2B Joe Wendle (2-4 2 1B) the Division 2 draft pick by the Indians this year continues to keep hitting at short season level. Average is up to .310 in 34 games.
Arizona Rookie League Indians W 14-12 vs. AZL Dodgers
SS Claudio Bautista (4-5 3 R 1 HR 3 RBI) Bautista was in the middle of the offensive fireworks show in late AZL action. The amazing thing about Bautista’s night is that he took over for Dorssys Paulino after he had 2 at bats.
3B Jorge Martinez (2-6 1 HR 4 RBI 2 R) Martinez had a 3 run home run, raising his average to .377 on the season. The 6’2 switch hitting infielder has seen marked improvement statistically in his third full year in rookie ball. He won’t be 20 until next spring
