(BOWLING GREEN, KY)- Alex Monsalve’s double in the fifth put Lake County ahead by a score of three to two. The Captains tacked on two more on a base hit by Jordan smith and scored a total of five runs in the fifth inning as they defeated the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Sunday afternoon in Kentucky. The Captains won the game 6-2. The Captains added the insurance run in the ninth on another Monsalve double.
Bowling Green scored the first two runs of the of the ballgame in the first inning. Ryan Brett walked to begin the inning and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Rice. With two outs the next hitter Jeff Malm hit a solo homerun to deep right field. Malm has three homeruns this year all of them have came against Lake County. The score was Bowling Green 2 and Lake County 0 after one inning.
The Captains had 12 hits in the ballgame. That marks the 13th game this season where Lake County has eclipsed the ten hit mark. Also, Lake County has now been errorless in the past four ballgames. The Captains have only committed one error to this point on the road trip.
With the win, the Captains have earned a winning road trip. They have four wins on the trip already and still have two ballgames to play in Kentucky before returning to Classic Park on Wednesday Night.
The Hot Rods sent RHP Roberto Gomez (1-1) to the mound to start the ballgame. Gomez struck out the side in the first and only surrendered one hit through four innings. In the fifth he allowed four hits and four runs and was saddled with the loss. Lake County also scored runs off of both relievers for the Hot Rods. The BG pen combined for 4.1 IP allowing seven hits and allowing those two runs. The pitching staff for BG did strike out 12 Captains hitters.
Shawn Morimondo (0-0) of the Captains got his first professional start and didn’t get a decision. Morimondo went four full innings and allowed the two runs both were earned with four walks and two strikeouts. Cole Cook (1-1) earned the win for the Captains after twirling three innings in relief. Cook allowed two hits and struck out just one. Grant Sides earned the save (1) his first of the season. Sides pitched a scoreless two innings to close the door on Bowling Green.
The Captains continue the road trip on Monday Night in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The Captains and the Hot Rods will be playing for the second time this season but the first time in Kentucky. BG swept the Captains in four games in Eastlake. First pitch is scheduled for 7:35pm.
