(AVON, OH) - A pair of three run homeruns by the Gateway Grizzlies lifted them to their second consecutive victory over the Lake Erie Crushers Saturday evening at All Pro Freight Stadium by a final count of 7-0.
The Crushers (7-13) allowed four runs in the first and three in the second, as starter Mike Inselmann (0-1) only went 1.2 innings and allowed seven runs.
Gateway (9-11) started off the ballgame with a single by Jonathan Johnson, and then later scored on a wild pitch with John Shelby at the plate. Then with Jerod Yakubik and John Shelby on with one out, shortstop Vladimir Frias pounded a three-run homerun to give the Grizzlies a 4-0 advantage.
Then in the second, Lorain's own Antone DeJesus singled with two outs after Inselmann retired the first two Gateway hitters. Yakubik would then walk, and then would be brought home-along with DeJesus-following John Shelby's fourth homerun of the season. Gateway led 7-0.
The Crushers' best opportunity to cut into the Gateway lead was in the sixth. Russ Moldenhauer led off the frame with a walk, and then advanced to second following a fielding error by Vladimir Frias at shortstop on a hard hit ball by Rogelio Noris. Then, with Kellen Kulbacki at the plate with nobody out, and Moldenhauer at second and Noris at first, Kulbacki hit one sharply to the right side right at first baseman Jerod Yakubik, who made the catch on the frozen rope line drive. Yakubik, after the catch, then stepped on first to double up Rogelio Noris. Brandon Decker would then lineout to end the inning, leaving Moldenhauer stranded at second.
The Crushers stranded nine men on base, including three in the third inning as they left them loaded when Wally Correa struck out to end the inning. Andrew Davis, Kulbacki, and Decker were each stranded on the bases.
Gateway's Patrick Arnold (1-0) was credited with the victory after throwing five innings of shutout baseball. He only allowed three hits, and finished with five strikeouts.
Lake Erie's Mike Inselmann (0-1) dropped his first game of the season in what was his first start of 2012. Inselmann only went 1.2 innings allowing seven runs on eight base hits, two of those eight hits being three run homeruns.
The Crushers will finish their three game series against the Gateway Grizzlies at All Pro Freight Stadium on Sunday evening. Right hander Eric Gonzalez-Diaz (1-3, 4.84) will start for the Crushers, and the Grizzlies will counter with right hander Cale Johnson (0-2, 6.05). The first pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PM. firstname.lastname@example.org or follow Uson Twitter@SportsSentinel also check out our Indians Nation Fan Page
