(SHERRILL, NY) - The trip to what once was known as “Silver city” was not so sterling for the Syracuse Salt Cats. After taking a 3-0 lead into the sixth inning, the Sherrill Silversmiths put up a two run sixth and then exploded for a four run, seventh inning, that the Cats couldn’t come back from, dropping the contest, 7-3.

Corbin Gapski scored on an infield single by Andrew Mederios in the second inning and Connor Thompson tacked on another run in the third inning with a sac fly, scoring Dan Fiorito, who led the inning off with a single.

The last run the Salt Cats could muster was in the sixth, with Menderios knocking in catcher Kevin Bailey, who led the inning off with a line drive double to left, and RBI groundout.

After the sixth inning, the Syracuse only mustered two base runners, both coming in the ninth inning. They were retired in order by the Silversmiths bullpen, in the seventh and eighth innings.

The Salt Cats got a strong starting performance by Mike La Londe, who went five shut out innings, allowing four hits and three walks, while striking out four. He wound up with a no decision.

Reliever John Mildner got the first two outs of the seventh inning, before allowing three straight singles and two of the runs came in on a triple by Tyler Decker of the Silversmiths, making it 6-3.

Nick Fleming scored on a passed ball in the eighth inning to cap the scoring for the Silversmiths.

Cory Mingin allowed two runs to Sherrill in the sixth inning, while Alex Pachella worked 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and no runs while striking out one.

Jordon Doroshenko (St. John Fisher) got the win for Sherrill, pitching two hitless innings in relief, allowing one walk.

Oliver Pratt pitched five innings, allowing two runs on four hits. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out one, while getting a no decision.

The Salt Cats (1-1) will come home for a two game home stand, and making their home debut on Monday at Le Moyne College at 5 p.m. Maso Cotton will be on the hill for Syracuse for the home opener.
