SHRIER SPORTS EDITOR (KIRTLAND, OH) - The Lakeland Community College Lakers men's basketball team rolled into the Lakeland Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon for their game against the Edison Community College Chargers on a nine game winning streak. Once again the Lakers proved to dominant for an opponent as they easily took down the Chargers 92-73 to improve to 17-4 overall and 6-0 in the OCCAC and extend the winning streak to double figures at ten games.
The Lakers started the game off once again doing the same thing they have done many times in the first half by using the shock and awe approach as they moved out to an early 9-0 lead just 3:05 into the game when sophomore Charles Oliver deposited a deep three pointer. Then just 3:07 later at the 13:48 mark of the first half the Lakers extended their lead to 17 at 22-5 when Sophomore Dashaun Robinson hit the Lakers 4th three point basket of the early going.
The Chargers then went on a 15-3 run over the next 4:15 when Brandon Ervin made a layup for Edison to pull to within five points at 25-20.
Edison eventually moved to within two points of the Lakers at 36-34 with 4:17 left in the first half when Jaron Isaac hit a 3 point shot. The Lakers responded with a 9-2 run to extend their lead back to nine points at 45-36 with 2:49 left in the half and eventually to ten at 53-43 when the first half ended.
Edison's Brandon Ervin led all scorers with 13 points at the break. Oliver led the Lakers with 12 points at the intermission. Sophomore big man Richard Smith led Lakeland in rebounds at the break with four and four points, he also had two blocked shots in 12 minutes.
The second half was a matter of maintain the lead for the Lakers and that's basically what they did and extended it by nine, outscoring the Chargers 39-32 to complete the 92-73 win.
The Lakers had four players in double figures as Oliver led the way, leading all scorers in the game with 19 points. Three other Lakers were in double figures and they included Sophomore Chaz Rollins with 18, Robinson with 12 and sophomore Chris Jefferies had 10. 10 of the 11 Lakers who played in the game scored.
Edison falls to 9-9 and 3-3 in the OCCAC.
Lakeland will be in action next on Wednesday Night at 7:30 p.m. at home against Columbus State.
