Matt Brown movie reviews "Brave" MATT BROWN MOVIE CRITIC Hey there fans, I saw Brave this weekend. It's a Pixar film with voices done by Kelly Mcdonald as Merida as well as Billy Connolly as Fergus and Emma Thompson as Elinor. Its a tale of a Scottish princess who isn't a normal princess nor does she want to be which leads to some harrowing events. I was attracted to the Scottish setting and folklore (I am a Scotsman myself).
The visuals were excellent. They were to the level you would expect from a Pixar feature; as was the voice work, accents and all. Setting, creatures and magic all had great artistic design. The one thing that really stood out to me was the character's hair, especially Merida's curly red hair. They way it moved and the texture of it were phenomenal.
I found the story to be pretty good. The beginning really grabbed me then about half-way through the film lost me a little bit but got me again at the end. I liked that the lead character was a female and the plot did not involve her falling in love with some brave fellow. I believe part of the magic to a Pixar movie are the little touches, from the little actions of minor characters to the texture in fabrics. As is normal in Pixar films, there were some jokes in there for adults.
I enjoyed Brave and I think it is a great film to take your kids to(though I do not believe it is quite as good as Up or Wall-E). This is the epitome of a father and daughter movie. Although, I think there is enough for young boys to enjoy too. If you are a fan of Pixar films or have young kids I believe it is definitely worth a $5 movie night. mbrown@lakecounty-sentinel.com or follow us on Twitter @LCSEntertainmnt POSTED 06/25/2012 13:22
