Matt Brown movie reviews "Savages" MATT BROWN MOVIE CRITIC Savages is about Mexican drug cartels and two American marijuana growers who get caught up in their world. It stars Blake Lively, Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson and Salma Hayek. The great Oliver Stone directs and helps with writing duties. I was not sure how I felt about the movie after leaving the theater.
It was, for the most part, a well done film. I felt like the trailers had misrepresented what the film was. They made it seem like it would be non-stop action and it felt like more of an action/thriller than a pure action film. The action in the film was done well but I could have used some more.
I could not get behind and really root for any of these characters. They were just so unlikable. I was not a fan of the protagonists at all. The only person I actually wanted to win out was John Travolta who played a dirty DEA agent. I enjoyed Benicio Del Toro?s character but I didn?t exactly root for him. Emile Hirsch was good in the little role he played as well.
Savages was brutal and visceral. The brutality fit the film and was well done. The script was strong and had some great actors to help bring it to life. The film had that dark Oliver Stone feel albeit with a sunny, coastal backdrop.
If you are a big Oliver Stone film fan this is worth a $5 movie night or matinee movie trip. For most, I think this movie would be good rent. I think this would have made a better spring or fall release because it just gets lost in the mix with all these big blockbusters coming out this summer. mbrown@lakecounty-sentinel.com or follow us on Twitter @LCSEntertainmnt POSTED 07/28/2012 00:22
