Matt Brown movie reviews "The Watch" MATT BROWN MOVIE CRITIC The Watch is a comedy about a neighborhood watch created after a murder frightens a pristine neighborhood in Glenview, Ohio. Instead of a human murderer, the culprit happens to be aliens. It stars Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, and Richard Ayoade. Akiva Schaffer is the director. I enjoyed it but I was hoping for more.
The movie started off slow but got funnier as it went on. Seth Rogen was a writer and it shows. This was a raunchy, rated "R" comedy in his style. The special effects and costume work was decent. The plot was pretty simple. It was the basic buddy comedy plot with a sci-fi spin.
The actors were what made this film. Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill were fantastic. Together, they were easily my favorite part of the movie. For someone that I have never heard of, Richard Ayoade was pretty good. Ben Stiller got stuck being the serious part of the film. Will Forte played a smaller role than the rest but he made me laugh in the scenes he was in.
The Watch had potential to be hilarious but instead just turned out to be an average comedy. If you need a comedy to watch until the Campaign comes out; the Watch is worth a $5 movie day trip. I think most can rent it or wait for to come to video on demand.. mbrown@lakecounty-sentinel.com or follow us on Twitter @LCSEntertainmnt POSTED 08/05/2012 15:44
