RubberDucks fall to Thunder 5-2
Trenton’s Ronald Herrera shut down the red-hot RubberDucks for nearly eight innings Thursday night, leading the Thunder to a 5-2 win in the opener of a four-game series at ARM & HAMMER Park.
Turning Point
With the Thunder holding a 1-0 lead in the second inning, Trenton’s Jake Cave lined a bases-loaded double to right off Akron starter Rob Kaminsky (1-2). It chased home all three runs and made it 4-0. Cave later scored on a single by Dante Bichette Jr. to extend the lead to 5-0.
Winging It
Kaminsky, a native of Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, north of New York City, returned to his home state, but struggled early. He allowed five runs on seven hits over the first two innings. After that, however, he settled down and lasted six innings and allowed no further damage. He walked three and struck out two. Justin Brantley provided relief help, working the final two innings and fanning four batters.
Duck Tales
Jeremy Lucas finally got Akron on the board in the eighth inning when he slugged a two-run home run off Herrera (2-0). It was Lucas’ fourth of the year and closed the gap to 5-2.
Herrra worked 7.2 innings to earn the win…He fanned nine and walked only two….At one juncture, Herrera retired 15 consecutive hitters…In the ninth, the RubberDucks put two runners on via walks by lefty Evan Rutckyj, but the Thunder went to closer Mark Montgomery who struck out Nellie Rodriguez and induced grounder by Yandy Diaz to end the game …Time of game: 2:25…Attendance: 3,857.

The RubberDucks and Thunder will meet again in Game 2 of the series on Friday night at 7. RHP Dace Kime is the announced starter for Akron, and LHP Dietrich Enns is expected to get the ball for the Thunder. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM, the WARF iHeart channel, and the TuneIn Radio App.
