Thunderbirds fly past Icebreakers 5-1

(MENTOR, OH) - The first period yielded no goal from either team. Brody Duncan broke the ice in the second 6:36 in to give Mentor the 1-0 lead. As he streamed into the Thunderbirds zone and scored top glove side. It was a 4-4 goal. The Thunderbirds got the goal back at 7:46 as it was still 4-4. It looked like the net was knocked off the boarings, but the refs said it was a good goal. It was awarded to Michael Bunn. Then Carolina scored again at 8:25 Jiri Pargac shot from the faceoff circle beat the Icebreaker goaltender. 

The third period saw the physical side of the game pick up. This comes as no surprise as these teams were heated rivals last year. Just 53 seconds in the period, the Thunderbirds extended their lead to two. A slap shot from the Thunderbirds Daniel Martin beat the Mentor goalie top glove side. The 4th Carolina goal came at 5:55 of the third. It looked like the Thunderbirds were offsides, but play continued on and it led to Michael Bunn scoring his second goal of the game from Dominik Fejt and Daniel Klinecky. The 5th straight goal for the Thunderbirds would be their last goal and the games last goal, it came on the power play at 10:55. A lose puck out in front tricked through the 5 hole of the Mentor goal tender. 

The Mentor Icebreakers started Jordan Brant in net and stopped 20/21 shots faced. The Carolina Thunderbirds countered with Jordan Brant who stopped 35/40 shots faced. Daniel Klinecky earned the first star of the game with 3 assists, second star Michael Bunn with 2 goals and 3rd star too Brody Duncan with a goal. 
Mentor takes on Carolina again tomorrow at 6:30 pm.
