Captains lose eighth straight falling to Kernels 8-1

The Lake County Captains entered Thursday's 11 a.m. game at Classic Park with a seven game losing skid. Thing did not change much on Thursday morning as the Kernels popped the Captains 8-1 in front of a nice crowd of 4,041.

The Kernels got five runs in the third inning off Captains starter Shai-Ching Chiang. The big blow in the inning was a three run home run by Zander Wiel. The homer for Wiel was his seventh of the season and gave Cedar Rapids a 5-0 lead.

The Kernels added their sixth run in the sixth inning when Chiang allowed another solo home run, this time Jaylin Davis took him deep. The home run for Davis was his second of the season.

The Captains tallied their only run of the game in the eighth inning when Sicnarf Loopstok doubled and was driven home on a single by Angel Miguel, to cut the lead to 6-1.

Cedar Rapids added two more runs to cap of the scoring in the ninth inning. Captain’s reliever Yoiber Marquina exited the game in the ninth inning with some unknown discomfort in his hand or fingers in the ninth inning.

The Kernel's starter Lachlan Wells picked up the win. Wells pitched six scoreless innings allowing four hits, while striking out eight Captains. With the win the Australian improves to 2-1 with a 1.27 ERA. 

Chiang, went six innings allowing six runs all earned on eight hits, issued one base on balls and struck out one batter. With the loss Chiang falls to 5-7 with a 4.45 ERA.

The Captains and Kernels will finish their three game series on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. Righty Dereck Rodriguez will take the mound for the Kernels. Rodriguez is 1-10 with a 6.27 ERA. The Captains will send Casey Shane to the mound. Shane a right hander is 5-6 with a 4.08 ERA.
