On Saturday night, the Lake County Captains opened a three-game series with the Clinton LumberKings (Mariners). It was Christmas in July at Classic Park, but the Grinch was disguised as the LumberKings. The LumberKings bludgeoned the Captains 12-5.

The Captains took an early lead 2-0 in the first inning when Miguel Eladio reached on a dropped third strike and Li-Jen Chu followed with his 12th home run of the season, giving Lake County a 2-0 lead.

Clinton came back with a six-run barrage in the top of the third inning to take a 6-2 lead. The Captains defense committed two errors in the inning, but Captains starter did not help his cause much as he allowed three run homer and two doubles.

The Captains got back into the contest in the bottom of the inning when they put three runs on the board courtesy of three singles (Conner Capel, Emmanuel Tapia and Michael Tinsley). Tapia’s single drove in one run. Tinsley’s single brought two runs, those ended up being the final two runs of the game for the Captains.

Meanwhile the LumberKings piled on, scoring six more runs. The runs came by way of two in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the eighth inning.

Garza was responsible for most of the damage as he went five innings allowing 10 runs, six were earned. He allowed nine hits, issued one base on ball and struck out two. One of the problems for Garza on the night was the long ball, he gave up four in his five innings. Garza took the loss and falls to 2-5 with a 6.35 ERA. LumberKings starting pitcher Nick Wells picked up the win. Wells went five innings allowing five runs all earned on four hits and struck out seven Captains. With the win Wells improves to 4-7 with a 6.50 ERA.

The Captains and LumberKings will play game two of the three game series. Ryne Inman will make the start for the LumberKings. Inman, a Righty is 0-0 with an 18.00 ERA. Luis Jimenez is scheduled to start for Lake County. Jimenez also a righthander is 2-3 with a 5.44 ERA.
