It was Cleveland Sports History Night on Saturday at Classic Park and has it has always been this celebratory night it was a special night. For the first time the Lake County Captains were able to celebrate a championship for one of the three Cleveland sports teams as the Larry O'Brien Trophy was in the house from the 2016 NBA Champion Cleveland Cavaliers.

The game however did not go as well as the Captains were beaten by the Dayton Dragons 7-2 in front of the largest crowd of the season 8,289 witnessed the loss.

Besides the Larry O'Brien Trophy the Akron RubberDucks Championship Trophy from 2012 was on display as well as the Captains 2010 Midwest League Championship Trophy.

The guest list of Cleveland area and Ohio sports legends was spectacular. Headlined by, Stipe Miocic current UFC Heavyweight Champion and Eastlake North Graduate. Also in attendance were Kirtland Hornets Football Head Coach Tiger LaVerde who has led the Hornets to three Championships. Kirtland is the first public School in Lake County to win a football state Championship. Otto Orf former Cleveland Crunch Goalkeeper another champions was in attendance. Several Ohio State Buckeyes from the 2002 Champion Football team were in attendance including current Cleveland sports talk show host Dustin Fox. Possibly the most impressive athlete in attendance on the night was Olympic Gold Medalist Butch Reynolds and Akron native.

Once again the Captains organization did a great job with the night. The Captains played the game in jersey's that were modeled after the Cavaliers jerseys from 1994 to 2002. The jerseys were auctioned off after the game. The proceeds from the jerseys were donated to Captains Charities.

The karma from wearing Cavs jerseys did not help the Captains. The game was a back and forth affair as the lead changed or the game was tied five times, but in the eighth inning already up 3-2 Dayton got a grand slam off the bat off Nick Senzel to give Dayton what turned out to be the final 7-2 lead.

The Captains and Dragons will be back in action again on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
