Riverside rolls over Aurora 40-13

(PAINESVILLE TOWNSHIP, OH) - The Riverside Beavers (0-1) hosted the Aurora Greenmen (1-0) Friday night in week two of Ohio high school football. The Beavers were looking for their first win of the season after losing in week one to the Steubenville Big Red 35-14, while Aurora was looking to pick up their second win in as many weeks after defeating Stow-Monroe Falls in a close victory 36-34.
Prior to kickoff Beavers coach Jeremy Ishmael said "We had some big mistakes last week and it cost us a win. We worked all week trying to clean up those mistakes because you can't have those against a team like Aurora. The guys have worked hard to not make the same mistakes and get better and play our game." They sure did clean up those mistakes as Riverside was all over the Greenmen of Aurora all night. Offense, defense, and special teams worked as one team as put on a show for a Riverside community that had packed the stands.
The first quarter was back forth with both defenses not wanting to give an inch. The players constantly communicating with their coordinators making sure they were lined up right, on the right man, and in the right formation. It was on display that both teams had been studying with each other all week.
The action started as Riverside quarterback Bo Brandehoff threw a perfect pass down the sideline and wide receiver Jay Kyser came down with it 40-yards for the first score of the game at the 11:18 mark of the second quarter. Riverside scored again six minutes last as Brandehoff found the speedy running back Jaxon Moore on a 45-yard touchdown pass.
Aurora would not be out done though and fought back with a touchdown of their own with just three and a half minutes left in the second quarter, as senior running back Aiden Samelko scored on a two-yard touchdown run that cut Riverside's lead to 14-7.
Riverside answered back in a massive way scoring on another Brandehoff to Kyser score, this time on a 37-yard connection. After a defensive stop, the Beavers would punch it into the end zone one more time right before the end of the half on a seven-yard rushing touchdown by Bo Brandehoff.
The defenses were again stellar, from both teams, at the start of the second half as neither team allowed much yardage. It seemed as if Aurora had made the right adjustments to stop the onslaught from the Beavers in the second quarter. The Greenmen didn't give up all night. Even as Riverside's defense was stifling and at times, like running into a brick wall.
Riverside scored early in the fourth quarter as Bo Brandehoff, again, found Jaxon Moore on 13-yard touchdown, putting the game out of reach at 35-7. Aurora, again, with no quit in them scored right back on an eight-yard touchdown catch between senior quarterback Ryan Ziegler to junior wide out Graham Walton. Riverside would add a field goal and safety late in the game to pick up their first win of the season 40-13.
After the game coach Ishmael talked about the team’s great defense against a tough Aurora team. "I think they (defense) took that performance last week a little personal, because that's not the standard with which we usually play. We realized that can't happen and the guys came out ready to play tonight.
Riverside will be on the road next week looking to start a winning streak taking on the (0-1) Austintown-Fitch Falcons, while the Aurora Greenmen will be back at home talking on the (1-1) Tallmadge Blue Devils. Both games are scheduled for Friday August 28th, with 7:00 pm start times.
