On Friday night the Wickliffe Blue Devils took on the Beachwood Bison, hoping to increase their chances to make the OHSAA football playoffs
for the second straight season. They certainly did nothing to hurt their chances and most likely increased them as they rolled over the Beachwood Bison 52-27 on Beachwood’s home field.
Things were close early on, with Beachwood leading 14-10 after Bison senior QB Ben Connor ran for a 3-yard touchdown with 7:47 remaining in the second quarter.
From that point in the contest the Blue Devils outscored the Bison 42-13. The night belonged to Wickliffe senior running back Nick Fenton. Fenton shredded the Bison defense all night long as he carried the ball 18 times for 334 yards including four touchdowns to lead the Blue Devils offensive attack.
Senior Nate Taylor also played a significant role for the Wickliffe ground attack. The speedy Taylor ran the ball six times for 76 hard earned yards. Taylor who isn’t afraid of contact was rewarded late in the fourth quarter with 4:31 left in the game when he crossed the goal line from two yards out for Wickliffe’s final TD of the game.
Wickliffe racked up 597 yards of total offense, 579 of which came on the ground on 42 carries.
With the win the Blue Devils improve to 6-3 overall and 3-3 in the CVC.
Next week the Blue Devils will travel to Geneva to take on the Eagles at 7:00 p.m.
