Tribe sweeps Mariners and Brewers in split squad games
The Cleveland Indians won a pair of split-squad games this afternoon, improving to 3-2-1 in Cactus League play.
Indians vs Mariners
The Tribe won its first home game of the spring with a 6-5 comeback victory over the Seattle Mariners. The Indians fell behind early 5-0, putting together 3-run rallies in the sixth and seventh innings to erase the deficit.
OF Oscar Mercado (1-for-3, 3B, R, RBI) jump-started the Tribe offense with an RBI-triple in the 6th. OF Jordan Luplow (1-for-3, 3B, RBI), who was acquired from Pittsburgh this winter, followed up with an RBI-triple of his own, coming around to score on an RBI-single by 3B Henry Pujols (1-for-2, RBI). 2B Max Moroff (1-for-3, HR, R, 3RBI), who was acquired in the same trade as Luplow, gave the Indians the lead for good with a 3-run homer in the 7th inning – his first of the spring.
RHP Adam Plutko got his second start of the spring, allowing five runs and six hits over 2.0 innings of work (5R/ER, 2SO, 1HR). Five Tribe relievers then combined for 7.0 innings of shutout ball, allowing just three additional hits. LHP Tyler Olson(1.0IP, 1SO) tossed his second consecutive perfect frame of the spring.
Indians at Brewers
The Indians defeated the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-1, as RHP Shane Bieber worked 2.0 perfect innings in his 2019 Cactus League debut – a road game that saw Tribe hurlers combine for a two-hitter.
Cleveland’s offense clubbed five home runs, including two apiece by 3B Mark Mathias and C Li-Jen Chu, in addition to a 2-run shot from OF Jake Bauers (#1 on the spring) in the 7th that scored OF Tyler Naquin (lead-off double). In addition to Bieber, RHP Nick Wittgren, LHP R.C. Orlan, RHP Jake Paulson and RHP AsherWojciechowski all recorded scoreless outings.
The Indians will again travel to Scottsdale’s Salt River Fields on Thursday to take on the Arizona Diamondbacks at 1:10 PM ET/3:10 PM MT. RHP Chih-Wei Hu will make his second start against RHP Merrill Kelly for the D-Backs. The Arizona webcast can be accessed on Indians.com.
