(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains opened the 2019 season on Thursday night at Classic Park. They welcomed the Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers) to town. The Captains with a loaded roster started the season off right shutting out Great Lakes 4-0.

The offense got off to a great start in the first inning when Captains second baseman Jose Fermin singled to left field to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a fielding error on by Loons left fielder Daniel Robinson. After shortstop Tyler Freeman lined out and left fielder Will Benson at the plate Fermin stole third base. Benson then walked to put men at the corners for right fielder Ruben Cardenas. With Cardenas at the plate Benson stole second and Fermin stole home to give the Captains a 1-0 advantage. Cardenas then struck out. Designated hitter Josh Rolette then came to plate and singled to center field and Benson came home with the Captain second run giving them a 2-0 lead. The inning ended when Catcher and 2018 Indians first round pick Bo Naylor grounded out.

The Captains extended the lead in the third inning when with two outs Benson hit a rope to right center field for a double. Cardena then singled to left field and Benson crossed the plate with the Captains third run of the game. Rolette then reached base on a fielding error by Loons third baseman Miguel Vargas and Cardenas moved to second. The Captains were then added further when Loons catcher Hunter Feduccia was charged with a passed ball, moving Cardenas to third and Cardenas to second. Naylor then drew a base on balls to load the bases followed by a base on balls to Captains third baseman Marcos Gonzalez to send home Cardenas with the fourth and final run of the game giving Lake County a 4-0 lead.
Meanwhile Captains starter, righthander Luis Oviedo was pitching a brilliant game. Oviedo went five innings allowing only four hits while striking out five Loons batters. He picked up the win to improve to 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA.

The bullpen was great too as Aaron Pinto pitched two scoreless innings allowing only one hit and one base on balls while striking out three batters. Dakody Clemmer also went two scoreless and hitless innings issuing one base on balls and striking out one hitter.

The Captains and Loons will play game two of the two game series on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. Righthander Andre Jackson will be on the mound for Great Lakes. Lefty Raymond Burgos will take the hill for the Captains.
