Captains sweep Loons with 6-1 win

(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains played game two of their two game opening season series on Friday night against the Great Lake Loons at Classic Park. The temperature rose as the game progressed and so did the Lake County bats as the Captains blew out the Loons 6-1.

The Captains got started early in the first inning sending seven men to the plate and scoring three runs. The inning began with a leadoff double by Jose Fermin. Tyler Freeman then singled up the middle moving Fermin to third base. As Will Benson struck out swinging for the first out of the inning Freeman stole second base. The theft was Freeman’s first of the season. Bo Naylor then singled to left field driving home Fermin and Freeman to give the Captains 2-0 lead. With Ulysses Cantu at the plate Loons starting pitcher Andre Jackson uncorked a wild pitch sending Naylor to second base. Cantu then grounded out to second base and Naylor moved to third base. Quentin Holmes then doubled and drove home Naylor to give the Captains 3-0 at the end of the first inning.

The Captains struck for two more runs in the third inning when with one out Benson doubled to center field scoring Benson. Jackson then uncorked another wild pitch moving Naylor to third base. Naylor crossed home plate when Cantu doubled down the left field line and the Captains led 5-0.

Lake County added their final run in the fourth inning when Hosea Nelson scored after Benson grounded into a double play. Nelson had walked earlier in the inning. The Captains led 6-0.

The Loons put their only run on the board in the eighth inning, to make the final score 6-1.  
Captains starter Raymond Burgos pitched five scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits, issued one base on balls and struck out four Loons to improve to 1-0. Manuel Alvarez picked up the save for Lake County, it was his first of the season. Andre Jackson took the loss for the Loons. Jackson lasted only two and two thirds innings. He allowed five runs all earned on seven hits, one base on balls and he struck out three Captains. With the loss he falls to 0-1.

The Captains will embark on their first road trip of the season on Saturday when they head to Midland, Michigan to play a two-game set with the Loons. Righthanded pitcher Josiah Gray will be on the mound for the Loons. Juan Mota will tow the rubber for the Captains. Both pitchers will be making their first starts of the season.
