The Wickliffe Blue Devils defense was dominant in their week one 41-0 blow out at Lutheran West. Early on Friday at the Blue Devils first home game things looked as they might be more difficult as the visiting Trinity Trojan’s offense looked good taking an early 7-0 lead, but that was it as Wickliffe’s defense got on track and trounced the Trojans 48-7 to move to 2-0 on the season.

After the initial scoring drive by the Trojans the Blue Devils both offensively and defensively never relented. The defense shutting out Trinity the rest of the game forcing six turnovers, four interceptions and two fumbles to turn the tide of the contest.

When Trinity took the 7-0 lead the Wickliffe offense immediately responded as Senior Chase Fortkamp ran 54 yards to the Trinity four yard line and set up a four yard touchdown run by Senior Mason Bala with 2:32 left in the first quarter. This was just the beginning of huge nights for Fortkamp and Bala.

Fortkamp then thwarted Trinity’s next drive with a fumble recovery. The Blue Devils were not able to turn the fumble into points, but on the Trojan’s next drive Bala intercepted a pass from Trinity QB Ian Anderson and the Blue Devils took over at their own 10-yard line. Wickliffe put together a solid drive which ended with a 30-yard TD run by Senior Isaiah Bolon to increase the lead to 14-0 after Bolon converted the extra point with 4:58 left in the first half.

Just 2:06 later after the Blue Devils defense forced another three and of the Trinity offense and a 49 yard run by Wickliffe Senior Donnell Jackson, Wickliffe extended their lead to 21-0 when Fortkamp scampered in from nine yards out for his second TD of the game.

Wickliffe’s defense again came up big forcing another turnover as Senior Mario Ceferatti intercepted an Anderson pass giving Wickliffe possession at the Trinity 35-yard line. With just 1:17 left in the first half Fortkamp scored his third TD of the half crossing the goal line from 11 yards out. After the Bolon extra point, the Blue Devils were in command 28-7.

In the second half Wickliffe continued the domination on both sides, Fortkamp and Bolon each had interceptions, while Jackson recovered the opening kickoff of the second half giving Wickliffe the ball to start the third quarter.

Jackson finished that drive with a 17-yard TD run with 10:56 left on the third quarter clock.

Fortkamp after his interception on the first play of Trinity’s next drive finished his night offensively as he ran 18 yards for the endzone for his fourth TD of the night to give the Blue Devils a 41-7 lead with 9:37 left in the third quarter, the running clock was now in play.

Wickliffe’s final score of the game came with 9:18 left in the final quarter when Bala took the ball in from 38 yards to put the final total on the scoreboard of 48-7.

The Blue Devils offense put up 394 yards, all on the ground on 38 attempts for a 10.4 average gain.

Bolon, Wickliffe Senior kicker has now converted six of seven extra points and has now converted 11 of 13 on the season for the Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils will be home again next week as they welcome the Cuyahoga Heights Redskins at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
