Indians split, split squad games
The Cleveland split decisions in a pair of exceedingly windy Cactus League contests on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Milwaukee Brewers, 9-3, at Goodyear Ballpark, while taking a 17-7 loss to the Kansas City Royals at Surprise Stadium.
RHP Trevor Bauer started the victorious home tilt in Goodyear, fanning 10 Milwaukee batters across 4.2 innings (4.2IP, 4H, 3R-ER, 1BB, 10SO, 1HR); all damage against the Tribe right-hander came on a 3-run homer by Keston Hiura in the 5th inning. RHP Jon Edwards, RHP Justin Grimm, LHP Tyler Olsonand RHP Neil Ramirez followed with scoreless relief efforts out of the Cleveland bullpen. DH Hanley Ramirez (1-3, 2RBI) drove in a pair of runs with a first-inning single, while C Roberto Perez(1-2, HR, RBI, R) added a solo homer in the 3rd inning. Cleveland’s offense was powered, in part, by four doubles, including SS Ryan Flaherty’s (1-3, 2B, 2RBI) two-run, two-sacker in the 5th. 3B Jose Ramirez (2-3, 2B, R) also chipped in a pair of hits.
Meanwhile in Surprise, the Royals managed runs in all but two frames, posting four-run rallies in the 1st, 4th and 8th innings. 1B Jake Bauers (2-3, R) plated five of the Tribe’s runs, hitting a 2-run double in the 1st and a 3-run homer in the 5th (2nd of spring). CF Greg Allen (3- 3, 2 2B, RBI, 2R) added three more hits to his impressive spring and is now batting .480 (12-for-25) in 10 Cactus League games with three doubles, a home run, two RBI and five runs scored. RF Tyler Naquin (2-3, 2R) had his first multi-hit game of the spring, hitting singles in the 1st and 5th. RF Trenton Brooks(1-1, BB, R, RBI) homered in his first at-bat of the spring, a solo shot to lead off the 7th inning. RHP Cody Anderson had his first start and third appearance of the spring cut short by a pair of early fielding errors (1.0+IP, 4H, 6R-2ER, 3BB, 1SO). RHP Nick Wittgren and RHP Henry Mertinez both tossed scoreless innings. Martinez has made six scoreless appearances with four strikeouts this spring (6.0IP, SV, 2H).
Cleveland will face the Colorado Rockies on Thursday afternoon at Goodyear Ballpark (1:05PM MT/4:05PM ET). RHP Shane Bieber (1-1, 1.00) will take the mound in his fourth spring start against RHP Jeff Hoffman (1-1, 3.60) of the Rockies.
