Captains maul Cougars 9-3
(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains and Kane County Cougars played game two of their three game series on Saturday night. The game was originally scheduled to start at 6:30 pm, but due to a light rain the game started 31 minutes late at 7:01 pm. It was worth the wait for the 2,237 in attendance at Classic Park as the Captains came from behind to maul the Cougars 9-3.

Things got off to a rough start for Captains starter Juan Mota once the game began as he gave up three runs in the first inning but settled down after. Mota went five innings allowing only four hits, only one after the first inning. He also issued a base on balls in the first inning and none after and stuck out four batters in the game.

The Captains stormed back with single runs in the first and third innings and two more runs in the fifth to take the lead. Added three more runs in the sixth inning and finished off the scoring with two more runs in the eighth.

Tyler Freeman powered the offense for Lake County as he went 2 for 3 with a double, home run, two RBI and 3 runs scored. Jesse Berardi also had a nice night going 3 for 4 on the night with two doubles and he scored a run.

Mota picked up his first win of the year improving to 1-4 and lowering his ERA to 5.97. Thomas Ponticelli picked up the four inning save. The save was Ponticelli’s second of the season. Erin Baldwin took the loss in relief for the Cougars. With the loss Baldwin falls to 0-1 with a 6.16 ERA.

The win snaps the Captains five game losing streak and their record improves to 15-13.

The Captains and Cougars will play the final game of the Series on Sunday, but will be wearing special uniforms and the Captains rebrand and play as the “Picantes de Lake County”

Righthander Matt Tabor will be on the mound for the Cougars. Tabor will be making his first start of the season. The starter for the Picantes will be lefty Raymond Burgos. Burgos is 2-0 with a 3.33 ERA..
