Picantes shut down Cougars 4-0

(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Picantes de Lake County and Cougars de Kane County wrapped up their three game on Sunday afternoon at Parque Clasico. The Picantes won the series 2-1 by shutting out the Cougars 4-0 in front of the 1,895 Picantes fans in attendance.

The game was a scoreless pitchers duel for the first five innings as Raymond Burgos got the start de Lake County. Burgos went four scoreless innings, working out of a bit of trouble on occasion and was removed from the game due to pitch count restrictions. Burgos allowed three hits, issued two base on balls and struck out four hitters before he was replaced by Aaron Pinto to start the fifth innings. Pinto pitched two innings of shut out baseball allowing two hits. Pinto also struck out one de Kane County hitter. Skylar Arias relieved Pinto on the hill for the Picantes to start the seventh innings. Arias struggled a bit allowing two hits in his one inning of work held the scoreless lead as he struck out two Cougars. Clemmer finished the game for the Picantes pitching the final two innings allowing three hits and striking out three de Kane County hitters.

Meanwhile the offense for the Picantes which had been silent through five innings got going in the sixth inning scoring two runs. Picantes third baseman Jesse Berardi drew a base on balls off Cougars reliever Ryan Miller to start the inning. Miller then hot Connor Smith with a pitch two put two men on base. Quentin Holmes then singled to the third baseman to load the bases, as Berardi and Smith both moved up a base. Ethan Larrison then replaced Miller on the mound for de Kane County. Hosea Nelson then grounded into a doubled play and Berardi scored the first run of the game. Tyler Freeman then singled, and Connor Smith came home to increase de Lake County’s lead to 2-0. Will Benson struck out end the inning and any further threat.

The Picantes added two insurance runs in the seventh inning when Mitch Reeves led the inning off with a home run. The home run was Reeves third of the season. Ruben Cardenas followed with a triple and scored when Bo Naylor followed with a sacrifice fly giving de Lake County the 4-0 lead, which turned out to be the final run of the contest.

Pinto picked up the win in relief for de Lake County. With the win he improves to 3-1 with a 1.10 ERA. Arias picked up a hold for his work, it was his fourth of the season. Miller took the loss for de Kane County. With the loss he falls to 0-4 with a 4.40 ERA.
With the win the Picantes improve to 16-13 and will remain in third place in the Midwest League Eastern Division.

The Picantes now head out on six game road trip to Beloit and Appleton, Wisconsin. First stop Beloit to take on the lanzador on Monday Night at 7:30 p.m. Neither team has announced starting pitchers for the game..
