Browns Announces Nearly $1 Million to Support Manufacturing Technologies in Northeat Ohio
(WASHINGTON, DC) – U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) announced that the National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a $995,904 Regional Innovation Engines Development Award to Case Western Reserve University for the discovery, development, and commercialization of sustainable manufacturing technologies. The investment was authorized by Brown's CHIPS and Science Act and made possible through the Fiscal Year 2023 Spending Bill, which Brown helped to write and pass.

"Investing in American production and Ohio workers is part of the work we are doing to put in place a new pro-American, pro-worker industrial policy,” Brown said. “This investment will continue Northeast Ohio’s leadership in manufacturing and position our state to lead in the industries of the future.”

Led by Case Western Reserve University, the project also includes the Greater Cleveland Partnership, Team NEO, MAGNET, JumpStart, City of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Cleveland State University, Cleveland Water Alliance, Northeast Ohio Hispanic Center for Economic Development, and Urban League of Greater Cleveland.

Brown has been a leader in supporting Ohio manufacturing. Brown was instrumental in passing the CHIPS Act of 2022, into law, which includes historic funding for domestic semiconductor manufacturing and made Intel’s $20 billion investment in Ohio possible. The Chips Act of 2022 will support and grow domestic supply chains, invest in Ohio manufacturing jobs, and reduce costs for Americans by reversing decades of offshoring American manufacturing.

Along with the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, the laws make historic investments to bolster semiconductor and battery production, and position the U.S. and Ohio to lead the world in the production of new technology like electric vehicles (EV), solar panel production, and sustainable aviation fuel. These laws boost advanced manufacturing hubs across the country, make historic investments in the Manufacturing USA and Manufacturing Extension Partnership programs Brown has long championed, and include Brown’s Buy America provisions are included in construction projects.
