(WICKLIFFE, OH) - Heading into Friday night’s matchup at Wickliffe Memorial Stadium, the Wickliffe Blue Devils were 5-0 and a really good football team. They were hosting the Kirtland Hornets who were also 5-0 and they aren’t a really good football team they are an elite machine. That showed on the field as the Hornets took down the Blue Devils 42-0.
The Blue Devils did stop Kirtland on the first drive of the game when they recovered a fumble with 9:05 left in the first quarter. The Blue Devils were not able to take advantage of turnover, and it was all Hornets after that as they scored on six of their next seven possessions. The Hornets have a dominating rushing attack that ran the ball 30 times for 266 yards and three TDs in the ground.
The Hornets are also versatile as they passed the ball 8 times for 160 yards and three scores. The only chink in the Hornets armor seemed to be fumbling the ball. Kirtland fumbled the ball four times, losing two of them but the Blue Devils were unable to capitalize.
Kirtland’s defense held the Blue Devils offense that looked very potent through five weeks to 119 total yards, 67 on the ground and 52 through the air. The Blue Devils were limited to seven first downs while the Hornets offense had 23.
Senior John Sivestro led the Hornets ground attack carrying the ball 14 times for 151 yards and also had 51 yards receiving and three TD’s (2 rushing, 1 receiving).
The Hornet’s passing attack was on point all nigh as senior Jake LaVerde was very sharp completing 7 of 9 passes for 149 yards and two TDs.
Freshman Eli Fitch led the Blue Devils on the ground with 45 yards on 14 carries. Blue Devils sophomore quarterback Dom Porcello completed 5 of 14 passes for 52 yards. Senior Jade Strehle led Wickliffe in receiving with 1 catch for 23 yards.
The result of this game statistically may not show it, but Wickliffe is a very good football team, but the Hornets are playing at an elite level once again.
Next week the Blue Devils will travel to Chagrin Falls (2-4) to take on the Tigers at C.S. Harris Stadium. The Hornets will be at home to host the Berkshire Badgers (3-3).
