Blue Devils trample Tigers 47-20

On Friday night the Wickliffe Blue Devils opened Chagrin Valley Conference play at the Chagrin Falls Tigers and set out to make a statement. After starting off the season 3-0 most observers were looking to their match up with the Tigers as a game they must win to prove they are a team that can compete for a post season bid. After the Tigers took an early 3-0 lead, it was all Blue Devils as they outscored Chagrin by 30 points to trounce the Tigers 47-20 and break a 16 game losing streak against their CVC rival.

After the Tigers early field goal with 10:31 left in the first quarter to give them a 3-0 advantage, the Blue Devils struck back with 7:54 left in the first quarter when Isaac Pettway galloped 74 yards for his and Wickliffe's first TD of the game. After Jared Tennant's extra point the Devils lead 7-3.

Chagrin Falls countered the Blue Devils score with their second field goal with 11:49 left in the second quarter, the field goal by Gavin Banks was 32 yards.

8:07 later Nick Fenton ran 44 yards for Wickliffe second touchdown, giving the visitors a 13-6 lead after the extra point failed. The Tigers then tied the game up on an 82 yard kickoff return by Patrick Holland. Not much went right for the Tigers after this point as they were outscored by the Blue Devils 34-7.

Pettway ran for two more TD's for Wickliffe, one from 71 yards and his final score of the game from three yards out for Wickliffe's final score of the game.

Pettway once again finished the game as Wickliffe's leading rusher with 218 yards. The sensational sophomore Pettway now has 654 yards through four games on 51 carries for a per carry average of 12.8 yards. Fenton, a junior for the Blue Devils also had a nice game, rushing for two TD's and 128 yards on 14 carries.

Senior QB Lucas Thomeier, threw for two Wickliffe TD's. The senior hit senior Rob Johnson for his first passing score from 48 yards out. His second TD pass came with :27 left in the second quarter when he hit senior Justin Fortkamp from 17 yards. The Blue Devils once again dominated in the yardage game as they out gained the Tigers 466 to 165 in total offensive yard.

The Blue Devils will be back in action at home next Friday night against the Perry Pirates.
