Captains hold off TinCaps 4-3  
(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains returned home on Monday night to start a seven game homestand. First up a three-game series with the Fort Wayne TinCaps (San Diego Padres). The Captains started got off on the right foot with a 4-3 win in front of 1,289 fans at Classic Park.

The game started well for the Captains on the first pitch from Fort Wayne starter Ramon Perez Captains leadoff hitter Quentin Holmes deposited the pitch over the left field fence giving Lake County an early 1-0 lead.

The Captains increased their lead to 4-0 in the fifth inning when Holmes led of the inning reaching on a bunt single down the third base line. Tyler Freeman then singled to right field and runners were at the corners. Then Holmes stole home and Freeman stole second base, putting the Captains on top 2-0. The stolen base was eighth and Freeman’s ninth. Ruben Cardenas then singled and moved Freeman to third. At that point Fort Wayne manager Anthony Contreras had seen enough of Perez and removed him from the game. Austin Smith entered and got Mitch Reeves to ground out and Freeman scored, and Cardenas moved to second base. Cardenas then moved to third when Smith balked. The final run of the inning came when Bo Naylor singled to left field and Cardenas crossed the plate giving the Captains a 4-0 lead.

Captains starter Shane McCarthy held the TinCaps scoreless on one hit until the sixth inning when things began to unravel. Jawuan Harris drew a base on balls to lead off the inning. Xavier Edwards then singled moving Harris to second base. Tucupita Marcano then singled to load the bases. McCarthy then gave up his third straight single to Augustin Ruiz driving home Harris and keeping the bases loaded and cut the lead to 4-1. The finals batter of the night that McCarthy faced was Dwanya Williams-Sutton and he reached first base on a walk scoring Edwards and cutting the lead to 4-2. Aaron Pinto then relieved McCarthy. Pinto did not get off to a good start as he surrendered a single to Justin Lopez and Marcano trotted home cutting the Lake County lead to 4-3.

McCarthy picked up the win for the Captains. With the win McCarthy improves to 4-2 with a 3.41 ERA. Ramon Perez took the loss for the TinCaps. With the loss Perez falls to 0-2 with a 4.88 ERA.

The Captains and TinCaps will play game two of the three game series on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. Righthander Efrain Contreras will be on the mound for the TinCaps. Contreras is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA. The Captains will counter with Luis Oviedo. Oviedo a righty is 4-2 with a 3.72 ERA.
