Captains fall to Hot Rods 3-1

(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains played game two of their four game series with the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Friday night. The game was a pitcher’s duel early but, in the end, the Hot Rods bats woke up and the Captains sent the 3,502 at Classic park unhappy with a 3-1 loss.

The Captains got on the board first in the fourth inning when Ruben Cardenas belted his third home run of the season to give the Captains a 1-0 lead.

The Hot Rods came right back with three runs in the top of the fifth inning off Captains starting pitcher Raymond Burgos. Burgos had only given up two hits entering the inning. He issued a base on balls to Grant Witherspoon to leadoff the inning. Roberto Alvarez then singled on a line drive to center field moving Witherspoon to second base. Michael Smith then executed a nice sacrifice bunt to move Witherspoon and Alvarez up a base to second and third. Both runners scored when Osmy Gregorio singled to center field. Burgos left the game after the Gregorio hit due to an undetermined injury. Aaron Pinto came into relief Burgos and retired the first batter he faced Beau Brundage on strikes for the second out of the inning, during the Brundage at bat Gregorio stole second base. Connor Hollis then a drew a base on balls in which Gregorio stole third base for his second of the inning and seventh of the season. Ford Proctor then hit a fly ball single to left field and Gregorio trotted home with the Hot Rods third run, extending their lead to 3-1.

Hot Rods starter Shane McClanahan, a number one pick of the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2018 June draft picked up the win. McClanahan went five and two thirds innings allowing one run, it was earned on five hits. The top prospect also issued three base on balls while striking out nine Captains hitters. Burgos took the loss for Lake County. Burgos went four and one third innings allowing three runs all earned on four hits. He issued one base on balls and struck out six. The loss was Burgos first of the season and he is now 2-1 with a 3.44 ERA.

The Captains and Hot Rods will play game three at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday night. Southpaw Christopher Sanchez will be on the mound for Bowling Green. Sanchez is 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA. Shane McCarthy will tow the rubber for the Captains. McCarthy, a righthander is 4-2 with a 3.41 era.
