Hey, fellow Democrats, keep your politics out of my sports
Opinon by Tim Shirer
I like to separate sports and politics. That is one of the reasons I love the Olympics.
But once again the people who want to make sport political have entered my domain, sports and honestly it pisses me off and I’d really like for them to go away. I am a sports fan, writer, and proud liberal Democrat.
I love to talk politics with people and yes, I cannot stand Donald Trump. He is an awful human being, just awful and has no right being President of the United States.
I also love to talk sports and argue about sports anyone that knows me knows that. But mixing the two together to me is taboo.
I remember the 1980 Miracle on Ice. I was 12 years old and it was amazing to see our USA Men’s Hockey team beat the mighty Soviet Union. Yes, there was no social media back in 1980, but there was no Americans hating the team either for their political views. The team had USA on the front of the jersey, and we loved our team because they did something no one thought they could do.
Part of the problem today is social media. Lies are a regular thing on social media, false narratives are a regular thing on social media. False narratives to get views are a regular thing on social media.
On Saturday night I set my alarm for 7:45 am Sunday morning so I could be up for the 8:10 am puck drop between the U.S. men and Canada. I watched the game from my couch in the same room that I watched the 1980 game with the Soviets and then the gold medal game two days later.
When Jack Hughes scored the goal to win the game in overtime, I was happy like I was in 1980 watching with my dad, sister, and brother. I even let out a screech (laryngitis from having the flu) when the goal was scored. It made me happy that my country was able to defeat Canada and win the Gold Medal for the first time in 46 years.
It wasn’t even two hours before I started seeing post from fellow American ripping the Men’s team for taking a phone call from Trump. Jesus Christ people, get over yourselves and take your f***ing politics somewhere else.
Just because they took the phone call and laughed at what the buffoon Trump said doesn’t mean they all support him. Some have already come out and said they will not be attending the ceremony at the White House. But the political narrative people (who I agree with a lot) don’t care they want us to hate the whole team Because of a phone call after a game? Give me a f***ing break. I won’t do it. You will not take my memory of being proud of my team and country away to further your narrative. I can think on my own, I have my own brain, and I refuse to fall into your trap.
I am proud of the Women’s team for refusing Trump’s invitation to the White House, but that doesn’t make me like them even more.
One last thing: KEEP YOUR POLITICS OUT OF MY SPORTS!!!!?
