The Wickliffe Blue Devils girls’ soccer team entered their sectional final playoff game on Thursday night looking to advance to districts and tie the program record for wins in a
season if they could defeat the visiting Wellington Dukes. The Lady Devils, the number two seed in the sectional had all they could handle as it took until double overtime for Wickliffe to pull out the 4-3 win.

The Blue Devils got on the board early, just 1:41 into the game. Sophomore Morgan Gabriel put the ball into the back of the net giving the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead.

Wellington tied the game at the 12:22 mark when Sophomore Madalyn Mull converted a shot from a tough angle on Blue Devils Goalkeeper Sophomore Kaylee Lauriel.

The Blue Devils regained the lead with 22:45 gone in the first half when with an assist by Junior Caitlyn Henderson, Senior Gianna Ranallo blasted the ball past Dukes Junior Goalkeeper Katrina Kosa to give Wickliffe a 2-1 lead.

Wickliffe extended their lead to two goals at the 36:35 mark when Sophomore Mia Welms unassisted snuck the ball into the Wellington goal securing a 3-1 lead. Which was the score at the halftime break.

The second half was the exact opposite of the first half as the Dukes held the Lady Devils scoreless for the rest of regular time while they put two goals into the net to send the game to overtime.
The Dukes cut the score to 3-2 at the 57:29 mark when Freshman Amanda Spiekerman knocked the ball past Lauriel. The lead was now one goal for the Blue Devils and the momentum had switch and was all on the side of the Wellington.
The Dukes came all the way back to tie the match at the 59:39 mark when Junior Grace Dudziak somehow managed to sneak the ball into the corner of the net past Lauriel and tie the game 3-3.

The game was all defense and very little offensive attempts for the rest of regulation as the two clubs were set to play overtime.

Not much changed in the first overtime. Overtime in high school soccer is 15 minutes. Neither club could put the ball into the goal, so a second overtime was in order on a cold night at Wickliffe Memorial Stadium.

The second overtime was very much like the first as neither team could do much offensively until with just 1:40 left on the clock in the second OT after 108:20 of time, Wickliffe Senior Joelle Banks blasted the ball past Kosa to give the Lady Devils the win and a spot in the district semi-final versus Cuyahoga Hts. At home on Monday at 7:00 p.m. at Wickliffe Memorial Stadium..
