Captains win home opener 5-1

(EASTLAKE, OH) -Tuesday night at Classic Park was the 2022 home opener for the Lake County Captains. It was the 19th home opener in club history. The season opened on April 9th with a doubleheader in Lansing, Michigan against the Lansing Lugnuts (Oakland Athletics) winning both ends of the DH 3-0 and 7-5. Returning to Classic Park for a six-game series with the Dayton Dragons (Cincinnati Reds). The home portion of the schedule got off to a good start as the Captains big seventh inning led to a 5-1 win in front of a nice opening night crowd of 4,869.
The game was pitchers duel for the first five innings as Joe Boyle started for the Dragons. Tanner Bibee (By-Bee) took the hill for the Captains. Each starter went for shut out innings before giving way to their respective bullpens. Bibee allowed just two hits and Boyle did not yield a hit.
The Captains got to the Dragons bullpen first in the sixth inning when Joe Naranjo led off the inning with a solo home run his first of the season to give Lake County a 1-0 lead.
The Dragons struck back in the top of the seventh inning with a single run tying the game at 1-1 off Captains reliever Raymond Burgos in his first inning of work. The run was unearned when Captains catcher Mike Amditis and center fielder Petey Halpin each committed errors allowing the run to cross home and tie the game.
The Captains effectively blew the game open in the bottom of the inning with four runs off Dragon’s reliever Nick Hanson. Hanson gave up four runs, three earned on two hits and he issued three base on balls in two third of an inning before he was removed by Dragon’s manager Bryan LaHair and replaced by Manuel Cahutt to get the final out of the inning and end the Captains barrage with the Captains leading 5-1 which was the eventual final score.
Burgos picked up the win and improves to 1-0 on the season with a 0.00 ERA. Hanson took the loss and falls to 0-1 with a 27.00 ERA.
The Captains and Dragons will play game two of the series on Wednesday night at 6:30 pm. Aaron Davenport will make the start for the Captains, Davenport is a righthander will be making his first start. James Proctor will be on the mound for Dayton. Proctor, also a righthander is making his first appearance of the season.
