(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains entered game two of their six game series with the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Wednesday night on a four-game winning streak and just three games behind the first place West Michigan Whitecaps in the Midwest League East Division. The Captains continued to hit well and pitch well on Wednesday night and extended the streak to five games with a 5-4 win.
The TinCaps got on the board in the first inning with one out when Albert Fabian took Captains starter Aaron Davenport deep. The home run was his second of the season and gave Fort Wayne a 1-0 lead.
The TinCaps added two more runs in the fourth inning when Carlos Luis doubled to lead off the innings. He then rode home two batters later with one out Joshua Mears hit his second home run of the series and 13th of the season giving the TinCaps a short lived 3-0 lead.
In the top fifth when the Captains knocked Fort Wayne starter Dwayne Matos out of the game with four runs. With two outs in the inning Angel Martinez singled deep second base and then advanced to second base on an errant throw by TinCaps second baseman Carlos Luis. Milan Tolentino then came to plate and laced a double to left field scoring Martinez giving the Lake county their first run and cutting the Fort Wayne lead to two at 3-1. Joe Naranjo then drew a base on balls putting runners on first and second for Jonathan Rodriguez. That did not go well for Matos as it was the last batter he faced when Rodriguez launched an 0-2 pitch deep over the right centerfield fence just below the Coca Cola sign on the scoreboard to give Lake County a 4-3 advantage and lining Davenport up for the win. Davenport went five innings allowing three runs, all earned on five hits. He issued one base on balls and struck out six TinCaps. With the win he improves to 3-5 with a 5.03 ERA.
The Captains added an insurance run in the seventh inning when Martinez led off with a single and advanced to second base on the play when TinCaps pitcher Ramon Perez made an errant throw. After Perez struck out Tolentino, he issued a base on balls to Naranjo. Perez looked like he might escape any further damage when he got Jonathan Rodriguez to fly, but it was not to be as Alexfri Planez stepped into the batter’s box and singled to left field scoring Martinez and extending the Captains lead to 5-3.
The TinCaps rallied in the eighth inning adding a run to pull to within one run against Captains reliever Zach Hart.
Raymond Burgos pitched a scoreless ninth inning for Lake County to pick up the first save of his career. Matos took the loss for the TinCaps and falls to 1-4 with a 5.12 ERA.
