Captains split doubleheader with Lugnuts

(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains and Lansing Lugnuts were postponed on Friday night due to torrential rains so on Saturday the two played a doubleheader. Doubleheaders at the minor league level are seven innings each. The two teams split the twin bill with the Captains shutting out the Lugnuts 8-0 in game and falling 4-2 in the second game.
GAME ONE:
The Captains got on the board first in the second inning when Gabriel Rodriguez led the inning off lacing a double to centerfield off Lansing starter Blake Beers. Rodriguez moved to third base one batter later when Aaron Bracho grounded out to Lugnuts first baseman Matt Cross. Rodriguez then crossed the plate when Mike Amditis smashed a laser down the right field line for a double giving the Captains an early 1-0 lead. Amditis followed Rodriguez home two batters later when Petey Halpin made it a trio in the inning with a double down the left field line increasing the Lake County lead to 2-0. Halpin scored the Captains third run of the inning when Joe Naranjo fell short of the trend in the inning and singled to centerfield.
The Captains scored their fourth run in the fourth inning when Korey Holland belted his fourth home run of the season over the left field wall.
The Captains blew the game wide open in the sixth inning with four more runs. The Captains totaled seven doubles in the game and 8 of their 10 hits were of the extra base variety.
Captains’ starter Rodney Boone pitched a complete game going seven shutout innings allowing only three hits. He issued two base on balls while striking out seven Lugnuts. Boone picked up the win and improved to 1-2 with a 4.43 ERA. Beers took the loss pitching five innings allowing four runs, all earned on seven hits. He also issued two base on balls while striking out three Captains. With the loss Beers falls to 0-2 with a 3.71 ERA.
GAME TWO:
The Captains got on the board first inning when Jonathan Rodriguez doubled and was driven home by Halpin giving the Captains an early 1-0 lead.
The Lugnuts struck for three runs in the top of the second inning off Captains starter Doug Nikhazy. All of the scoring came when Matt Cross hit a three-run home run giving Lansing a 3-1 lead.
The Captains struck back with a run in the bottom of the second off Lugnuts starter Jack Owens. Owens a lefty allowed four singles in the inning including a single by Quentin Holmes who drove home Milan Tolentino to pull the Captains to within one run at 3-2.
The Lugnuts added a run in the fifth inning to complete the scoring on the night. Nikhazy who gave up all four runs took the loss and falls to 2-4 with a 3.71 ERA.
Lansing reliever Kumar Nambiar got the win for the Lugnuts going one and one third shut out innings allowing just one hit and striking out two Captains. With the win Nambiar improves to 5-1 with a 4.08 ERA. Trayson Kubo pitched the final two innings for Lansing and picked up his sixth save of the season.
The two teams will finish the series on Sunday afternoon at 5:15 pm. Osvaldo Berrios will take the hill for the Lugnuts. Berrios, a righthander is 1-8 with 7.54. Tommy Mace will tow the rubber for the Captains. Mace also a righthander is 0-3 with a 5.87 ERA. Mace was the Cleveland Indians Competitive Balance pick B 69th overall in the 2021 July Draft out of the University of Florida and is a native of Tampa.
