(PAINESVILLE, OH) - After a nice start and win over Malone University 70-63 to the season on Friday night, the Lake Erie College Storm women’s basketball team was back in action at the Osborne Center on Saturday afternoon. Saturday was the second day of the GLIAC/G-MAC Challenge as the Storm took on the visiting Davis & Elkins Senators (1-0).

Thing were a little different on Saturday afternoon as the Senators got off to a good start in the first quarter leading 12-9 with 4:59 reaming in the period and extended the lead to 12 points at 23-11 when time expired in the first. Davis & Elkins Senior Stephanie Wooten led all scorers in the period with nine points.

Things did not get any better in the second period for the Storm as the Senators maintained their 12-point lead and led 37-25 at the half. One positive for the Storm was the fact they held Davis & Elkin’s Wooten scoreless in the quarter. The fact they could not cut into the Senator’s lead while doing so was a negative. Wooten led all scorers at the half with nine points. The Storm did out rebound the Senators 22-18 in the first 20 minutes.

Whatever Lake Erie Coach Bob Booher told his team at halftime seemed to light a fire under them as they came out with much more intensity than they did in the first half and it showed on the scoreboard as the Storm chipped away at the Davis & Elkins lead. Finally, with :51.9 left in the 3rd when they took a 54-53 lead. The lead for the Storm was their first of the game. The Senators came right back and regained the lead to lead 58-54 but the Storm had set the tone for the 4th quarter that they were not going away. Storm Junior Guard Kayla Gabor, a Mentor High School graduate led all scorers in the third with 12 points. Wooten had nine for the Senators.

The fourth quarter was a battle as the Storm outscored the Senators 11-7 in a defensive battle as the game headed for overtime.

Overtime was no different than the 4th quarter as each team scored only six points and the game moved to a 2nd overtime.

The youth and inexperience of the Storm finally showed up in the 2nd overtime as Davis & Elkins outscored the Storm 10-3 to win the game 81-74.

Wooten was the leading scorer in the game with 31 points including eight three point baskets. Gabor led the Storm in scoring with 22 points. Christine Dawson added 17 for the Storm in the loss.

The Storm will be back in action next Friday on the road at the Roberts Wesleyan Tournament, when they play Saint Joseph at 5:00 p.m.
