The The Wickliffe Blue Devils boys’ soccer team entered their sectional semi-final playoff game Saturday afternoon in a bit of a slump as they had lost six of seven matches,
entering the game with an 8-7-1 record. The Blue Devils had been nursing some injuries which had contributed to the slump but were healthy on Saturday as they welcomed the Grand Valley Mustangs to Wickliffe Memorial Stadium. The weather was to say the least not good as the game was delayed 47 minutes at the start. In the end through the initial delay and a second delay the Blue Devils prevailed 3-2.

Wickliffe got on the board quickly. Just 4:26 into the game when assisted by a teammate Senior Nick Telisman blasted a shot into the Mustangs goal to give the Blue Devils the early 1-0 lead. The Blue Devils increased their lead to 2-0 at the 8:06 mark when Sophomore Jack Sumrada, assisted by Telisman snuck the ball into the net.

Wickliffe stellar defense took over at that point lead by Senior Daniel Kishmarton. The Blue Devils put another goal on the board before more weather arrived and the game was delayed for another 35 minutes.

Once the game resumed the first half was completed and the normal 10-minute halftime was replaced by a three-minute intermission.

Things tightened up in the second half. At the 54:30 mark of the game Tyler Phillips put the Mustangs on the board and closed the gap to 3-1.
Things became more interesting at the 75:57 mark when Luke Morton put the ball past Wickliffe Senior Goalkeeper JT Brenneman, closing the gap to one goal at 3-2.

In the final four minutes the Wickliffe Senior Jonny Abramczyk and a huge contribution sophomore CJ Kulchock tightened the defense once again and the Blue Devils held off the Mustangs charge to take home the win and advance to the sectional final.
