Captains shut down by Cubs 6-1 in Hankins home debut

(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains welcomed the South Bend Cubs to Eastlake on Wednesday night. The Captains entered the contest winnings two out of their last three games and the Cubs entered dropping two of their last three. The tables were turned in game one of the series as the Cubs out pitched the Captains taking the contest 6-1.
The fifth ranked prospect in the Cleveland Indians organization Ethan Hankins made his home debut for Lake County. Hankins was the Indians top pick in the 2018 draft out of Forsyth Central High School in Cumming, Georgia. Hankins is a big boy at 6’6 250 lbs., the 19-year-old has been clocked in the mid 90’s and hit 95 on Wednesday night.
The start for Hankins was his second in a Lake County uniform as he made his Captains debut on the road on August 8 in Great Lakes against the Loons. Hankins pitched four innings allowing one run it was earned on one hit, striking out three Loons and issuing five base on balls. The Captains lost the game 5-4 and Hankins was awarded a no decision for his work.
On Wednesday night things got off to a bit of a rough start as Hankins gave up a home run to the game’s leadoff batter Darius Hill. The home run for Hill was his first of the season and the first home run that Hankins had surrendered as a Captains his second as a professional as he had allowed one long ball in his time this season at Mahoning Valley with the Scrappers.
The big righthander settled down, not allowing another run until the fourth inning when he allowed a single run and then two more in the sixth inning. The sixth inning was his last as he left the game with one out in the frame.
Meanwhile the Captains who rank second in the Midwest League in runs scored with 560 could not manage much offense. They did not get on the board until the seventh inning on a solo home run by Clark Scolamiero. The home run by Scolamiero was his second of the season.
Captains reliever Tim Herrin gave up two more runs in the eighth inning. Herrin went two and one third innings allowing the two runs on four hits. He also issued a base on balls while striking out two Cubs hitters.
South Bend starter Faustino Carrera was brilliant in his five and two thirds shutout innings of work allowing only three hits and striking out seven Captains. For his effort he picked up the win and improves to 7-6 with a 3.31 ERA. Hankins took the loss for the Captains. Hankins went five and a third innings allowing the four runs, only three were earned on four hits. He issued two base on balls and struck out four Cubs hitters. With the loss Hankins falls to 0-1 with a 3.86.
The two clubs will play game two of the series on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Righty Zach Mort will take the mound for the Cubs. Mort is 5-2 with a 3.72 ERA. Eli Lingos will be on the hill for Lake County. Lingos, a lefty is 2-3 with a 4.40 ERA.
