Wickliffe wins 41-0 but the win is costly

(WOODWARD, OH) - On Friday night the Wickliffe Blue Devils (3-0) traveled to Woodward, Ohio to take on the Woodward Polar Bears (0-3). Wickliffe entered the game giving up just 16 points in their first two games. Tonight, the defense was even better as they shut out the Polar Bears 41-0, but the win did come with a cost.
The Blue Devils got on the board quick, just 1:32 into the game junior quarterback Dom Porcello scored on a 17-yard keeper.
Unfortunately, the TD by Porcello was the highlight of his night as he left the game after an 18-yard run at the end of the first quarter with an apparent knee injury. It’s just another tough blow for the Blue Devils signal caller as he just returned to good health after suffering an injury to his throwing arm last season in Wickliffe’s playoff loss to Kirtland.
Sophomore Jagz Zivnoska took over under center for the Blue Devils. He went 2 of 5 for 10 yards, but the run heavy Wickliffe relied on the run the rest of the way. Scoring twice in the second quarter. First when junior Jayden Johnson took it in from 10 yards out. Johnson was having a great first half as he intercepted a pass in the first quarter and returned it 14 yards.
Johson scored again on a 14-yard run to give the Blue Devils a 27-0 halftime lead.
Senior Nick Obozcky ran for his second six-yard TD of the game in the third quarter.
The game’s scoring was capped off in the final quarter when freshman Devin Hunter took the ball in from eight yards out.
Wickliffe continued to show an elite level defense allowing just 31 yards on 28 plays. They allowed 16 yards on 22 rushing attempts and 15 passing yards on six attempts.
While the Wickliffe offense continued to roll even after the unfortunate injury to Porcello. They racked up 381 yards of offense, 371 of those yards were on the ground on 39 rushing attempts for an average of 9.5yards per attempt.
Oboczky led the way again by putting the Blue Devils ground game on his back rushing 13 times compiling 109 yards. Johnson also scored twice carrying ball four times for 59 yards. Before he exited the game in the first quarter Porcello had 5 rushes for 55 yards and the TD.
Next week the Blue Devils will welcome the winless (0-3) Trinity Trojans at 7 pm at Wickliffe Memorial Stadium on the Campus of Wickliffe.
