(PERRY, OH) - It’s been a tale of two seasons for the host Fairport Harbor Skippers and visiting Wickliffe Blue Devils on Saturday night at Alumni Field in Perry. The Skippers are playing their home games at Perry this season as historic Greig Field undergoes a massive renovation.
The Skippers were celebrating homecoming, but the Blue Devils who suffered their first loss of the season last week falling to Cuyahoga Hts 31-14 were there to spoil the homecoming festivities and they did just that as they shut out the Skippers 42-0 to move to 7-1 on the season.
Six different players scored for the Blue Devils, including two touchdown passes by sophomore quarterback Jagz Zivnoska.
Wickliffe’s senior leader Nick Oboczky scored the first points of the game as he took the ball into the end zone from six yards out capping off a six play 49-yard drive with 9:07 left in the opening quarter.
Just 1:35 later Wickliffe increased the lead to 14-0 on the first play after a Skipper’s punt junior Jayden Johnson blew past everyone rumbling 43 yards for the touchdown. It was apparent that the shorthanded Skippers were not going to be able to compete with the Blue Devils offense. The Skippers who have had to work with low numbers all season are now racked by injuries missing four key players on Saturday night.
Wickliffe scored two more times in the second quarter including a six-yard TD pass from Zivnoska to senior Colton Allen Johns. When asked after the game how it was to work with Zivnoska who was thrusted into the starting role in week for after a knee injury ended the season for Blue Devils junior QB Dom Porcello. Johns said, “We’re all behind our guys Jagz, when he gets down, we’re behind him and I think that really helps.”
The Blue Devils got on the board two more times in the third quarter and the running clock took effect.
Not only did the Blue Devils offense put on a show Saturday night, but the defense also pitched the shut out led by senior linebacker Sam Parker. Perker was asked after the game what it was like being part of the Blue Devils stifling defense, “It’s amazing really, we have studs all over from the secondary to the D-line. He went on to say, “We create a lot of chaos and pressure as you saw today.”
The Blue Devils held the Skippers offense to -18 yards on the ground and 140 yards total offense. Skippers QB junior Laydon Muzzin, who was under pressure all night but avoided being sacked completed 11 of 25 passes for 158 yards and one interception.
Zivnoska threw just four passes completing three for 16 yards and two TDs.
The Blue Devils running game was in full force again as they scored four touchdowns and racked up 267 yards on 35 carries.
Oboczky once again led the Blue Devils attack with 102 yards on 15 carries and one TD. Johnson fell one yard short of the century mark on the ground on 12 carries and a TD.
Blue Devils coach Marce Porcello was happy with the effort after last week’s loss, “Our guys were disappointed how we played last week, and I thought we did a really good job of bouncing back. We talked about it all week, it was kind of a redemption week where we had to prove to ourselves who we were and I thought we did a really good job of that tonight.”
With the loss the Skippers fall to 1-6 and will travel to Independence (4-4) at 7 pm on Friday.
The Blue Devils will be at home facing the Brooklyn Hurricanes (2-6) also at 7 pm.
