(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains scored just enough on Sunday afternoon to beat the Dayton Dragons 3-2 and end a four-game skid. On Monday night they ended most of the doubt early as they routed the Dragons 13-2.
The Captains who had been struggling offensively scoring only nine runs in their last for games entering Monday put up three four run innings on the night in the first, second and eighth innings.
In the first four run frame Jose Fermin had the big blow when he belted his sixth home run of the season over the left field fence. Giving the Captains a 2-0 lead. They went on to score two more runs in the inning to lead 4-0 after one.
The four runs in the second inning came all at once when Bo Naylor hit a grand slam to put Lake County on top 8-0 and drive Dayton reliever Connor Curlis. Curlis relieved Jordan Johnson who only lasted one plus inning allowing six runs, all earned on six hits and one base on balls. Johnson took the loss falling to 0-1 with a 54.00 ERA. The home run for Naylor was his 11th of the season and his 59, 60, 61st and 62nd RBI of the season. Naylor was not finished.
In the Captains third four run inning of the night Naylor struck again with a two-run triple. Naylor ended his nigh 2 for 5 with two runs scored and six RBI for a season total of 64. He leads the Midwest league in triples as a catcher. That is a very rare feat in baseball at any level.
Alex Royalty made the start for Lake County and pitched a great game that was only overshadowed by the performance of Naylor. Royalty went six and one thirds innings allowing two runs, both earned on four hits. He issued one base on balls and struck out six Dragons batters. With the win Royalty improves to 6-8 with a 4.37 ERA.
Game four of the four game series will be Tuesday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. Righthander Eduardo Salazar will take the mound for the Dragons. Salazar is 6-3 with a 4.05 ERA. The Captains will send Shane McCarthy to the hill. McCarthy is 4-3 with a 4.11 ERA.
