The Fairport Harding Skippers had a home playoff game Tuesday night against the Andrews Osborne Academy Phoenix that wasn't exactly at home. The Fairport High School gym was not playable due to a water pipe break. But in a nice gesture the Madison Blue Streaks loaned them their gym. In the end not being in their own gym did not matter as the Skippers avenged a 31-point loss to the Phoenix in the first round of the playoffs last season by cruising past AOA 68-59.
The Skippers came out a little slow as did the Phoenix. The AOA would win the quarter 14-11. Senior Juan Sergio led Andrews Osborne with 6 points and Senior Chris Peoples who recently won North East Ohio Division 4 player of the year led the Skippers with 7 points.
The second quarter was a different story for the Skippers as Senior Dom Trusty got hot hitting four triples in the quarter and Junior Sam Honkala hit two more 3’s propelling the Skippers into the half with a 38-21 lead. The leading scorer at the half for the Skippers was none other than Trusty with 12. Andrews Osborne's leading score at the half was Sergio with eight points.
The third Quarter started off slow for both clubs and really did not get much better. The Skippers went from hotter than a midday sun in the second quarter to colder than Alaska in February as they only scored nine point being outscored 16-7 in the quarter. Phoenix Guard Max Rolnick put up 11 points in the quarter bringing his total to 14 in the game making him the leading scorer for Andrews Osborne heading to the fourth quarter, tied with the Trusty for the Skippers. Fairport was up by ten 47-37 heading into the final quarter.
Both teams had good offensive fourth quarters as the Skippers scored 21 points and the Phoenix scored 22. Peoples and Junior Sam Honkala lead the Skippers in the game with 17 points each. AOA’s Rolnick lead all scorers with 21 points.
The Skippers will host the Independence Blue Devils in the Sectional finals (most likely Madison High School) on Friday at 7pm.
