(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains returned home on Saturday night for their final series of the regular season. The series is a three-game set against the Great Lakes Loons. The series will not be the last time they see the Loons as they are the Captains first round playoff series, that series begins on Wednesday night with the first game at Classic Park. Hopefully there will be a better result in the first playoff game than there was in the first game of this series as the Loons shut out the Captains in front of 6,926 fans at Classic Park.

The Loons got on the board with a four run second inning when Justin Yurchak. Captains starter Alex Royalty then uncorked a wild pitch and Yurchak moved to second base. He then issued a base on balls to Romer Cuadrado to put men on first and second. Matt Cogen then singled to load the bases. Brandon Lewis then hit into a fielder’s choice, Cogen was retired at second base and Yurchak scored the first run. Royalty then reloaded the bases when he issued a base on balls to Dan Robinson. Jair Camargo then hit a ground ball fielder’s choice, Robinson was retired at second base and Cuadrado scored the Loons second run. Royalty then uncorked his second wild pitch of the inning and Camargo moved to second base. Then came the big blow in the inning when Sam McWilliams doubled to left field and Lewis and Camargo scored giving the Loons a 4-0 lead.

The Loons put two more runs on the board in the sixth inning when Cogen drew a base on balls with one out and then Lewis homered over the left field fence. The home run for Lewis was his first of the season. Captains reliever Tim Herrin was responsible for the two runs allowed in the inning.

There was very scary moment in the game, hard to watch as Captains catcher Jos Rolette who had reached base on a fielder’s choice was running to second on aground ball hit by Ulysses Cantu when Rolette collapsed to the ground in severe pain with an apparent non-contact injury to his right leg. Rolette had to leave the field on a cart.

Great Lake starting pitcher Zach Willeman pitched six scoreless innings allowing only one hit, he issued four base on balls and struck out one Captains hitter. Willeman picked up the win for his efforts and improves to 4-7 with a 5.38 ERA. Royalty was tagged with the loss for Lake County. He went four innings allowing four runs, all earned on three hits. He issued two base on balls and struck out three hitters. With the loss Royalty falls to 6-9 with a 4.54 ERA.

The two clubs will play game two of the Series Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m. Stephen Kolek will be the starting pitcher for the Loons. Kolek is 7-8 with a 5.05 ERA. The Captains will send righty Shane McCarthy to the mound. McCarthy is 4-3 with a 4.14 ERA.
